The pet industry’s revenue was R$22.3 billion in 2019, taking into account the production of pet food, pet care (hygiene and well-being) and pet vet (medicines and other veterinary products), according to data from Abinpet.

The expansion of the pet food and pet care markets

According to Abinpet, Brazil has the second largest population of dogs and cats in the world, and is the third largest country in terms of total pet population. With the increasing demand for longevity and quality of life for domestic animals, this niche is one of the most promising, achieving record sales and showing how much this market has the potential and resilience to be the last to be hit by crises and the first to emerge from them.

The growth of the pet food and pet care markets is due to the recognition of the interaction between humans and animals. Meanwhile, access to information is making pet owners increasingly demanding of what is offered to their pets. As family members, they live more and more in Brazilian homes, which makes pet owners always seek to improve their animal’s health care and invest more in food and well-being. Therefore, it is indisputable that the pet phenomenon is here to stay. The human-animal relationship brings several benefits to both, and it is estimated that the population of cats and dogs in Brazil will grow more and more over the years.

Pet Care Market

Pet owners are increasingly concerned and committed to providing a better quality of life for their pets, which goes beyond simply providing quality food, vaccinations and basic hygiene.

In 2019, the pet care market – health, hygiene and animal welfare – generated 8.3% of a revenue of approximately R$22 billion, according to data from Abinpet. Between accessories, beauty products and equipment, among others, this niche is a trend and makes all the difference in the care of companion animals.

Pet Food Market

According to Abinpet, the pet food segment represented 73.3% of the industry’s revenue and generated R$16 billion of the total of approximately R$22 billion in 2019. The pet food market is responsible for handling the entire food chain for pets, which may or may not be industrially produced. With the growing demand for natural products, diets have evolved to keep up with human trends. For intolerances and allergies, grain-free alternatives have become increasingly popular.

Due to consumer demand, several options have emerged on the market to meet the demands of those who want something different for their pets. According to Abinpet, the pet food market can be classified as:

  • Complete food: A product that meets the nutritional requirements of pets. Composed of ingredients or raw materials exclusively for feeding pets, with specific or functional properties, it meets all nutritional requirements.
  • Supporting food: This type of food is made up of ingredients or raw materials exclusively for animals that have metabolic or physiological disorders and that have specific nutritional requirements.
  • Specific food: It is not characterized as a complete food, and has specific properties. This type of food is exclusive to pets, with the intention of pleasing or serving as a reward for the pet.
  • Chewable product: Made with animal and/or vegetable by-products, it is produced exclusively for pets. With the aim of pleasing and offering fun to the pet, the chewable product has a low nutritional value.
  • Supplement: The supplement is a mixture of ingredients for pets, which aims to balance the nutritional balance;
  • Additive: Additives are designed to meet the nutritional requirements that the raw materials used in the manufacture of feed do not provide. They improve the performance of animals and improve the overall health of the pet.

Phosphates: solution for pet food and pet care

Phosphates are stabilizers, emulsifiers, dispersing agents, mineral supplements, discoloration inhibitors, acidulants, sequestering agents and reducers of thermal resistance of some microorganisms (helping to extend shelf-life).

With the increasing demand for balanced and nutritious food for pets, phosphates are an excellent option to enhance flavor and make food more attractive. In addition, they influence the well-being and contribute to improving the quality of life of pets.

See below a summary of the functions (next to the source of phosphorus) in the application of pet food:

The importance of animal supplementation

A healthy and balanced diet must contain essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the organism and all parts of the body, which directly influences the quality of life, well-being and longevity of pets.

Calcium Carbonate

High-purity, natural calcium carbonates are the preferred source for pet nutrition. In addition, calcium provides many health benefits, including bone building, tooth remineralization, muscle growth, and normal blood clotting. It also acts as an inert carrier of vitamins and nutrients. The consumption of calcium carbonate is extremely important for its replacement and prevention or treatment of bone diseases, in addition to having several benefits for animal health.

Guar gum

In the processing of wet food, Guar Gum increases viscosity during cooking, facilitating the canning process. In addition, Guar Gum is a source of fiber in the product, improving the homogenization of the pate and helping with fecal consistency and volume, promoting the intestinal health of pets.

Vitamin K2

A nutritious and balanced diet is essential to keep your pet healthy. Vitamins are organic compounds that help the body function properly, such as during digestion, growth and development.
